I Tried Paying for Everything with UPI Credit Cards for a Week — Here’s What Actually Happened

When I first heard you could use a credit card on upi, I figured it was marketing nonsense that wouldn’t work in real life.

Turns out I was completely wrong.

I’ve been a UPI user for years, loving how simple it makes splitting bills or paying street vendors. But there was always an annoying gap. When I wanted to buy something but my account was empty until payday, I’d dig through my wallet for my physical credit card or just wait. Not anymore.

How I Actually Set This Up

Downloaded a banking app that offers RuPay credit cards. Got approved in 7 minutes. I timed it because I expected some lengthy verification process that never came.

They instantly gave me a ₹2.5 lakh limit, which blew my mind since my credit score is decent but nothing extraordinary. I could start using it immediately through Google Pay without waiting for the physical card to arrive.

The linking process was shockingly straightforward. Just opened Google Pay, navigated to payment methods, punched in my RuPay credit card details, and that was it.

Where I Actually Used It

I took this thing everywhere during that week to stress-test it properly, not just at big chain stores where everything works anyway.

Coffee shops, grocery runs, online shopping, even paid my internet bill with it.

But the weirdest moment happened at this tiny momo stall near my office where the guy has just a basic QR code printed on paper and taped to his cart. I scanned it, picked my credit card in the UPI app, and the payment cleared in maybe 2 seconds. The vendor looked at me like I’d performed magic because he had no clue credit cards could work through UPI.

I tracked every rupee during this experiment. Spent around ₹28,700 total. Got roughly ₹2,300 back in cashback rewards. Not retirement money, but it covered my Netflix and Spotify subscriptions for the month.

What Surprised Me Most

Nobody mentions this in promotional materials: cashback categories rotate monthly. Last month groceries were at 15%. This month dining is at 20%. I’ve started timing bigger purchases around these rotating categories, which sounds neurotic but makes financial sense.

The interest-free period stretches to 62 days including a 3-day grace period. If you time purchases right after your billing cycle resets, you basically get two full months of free credit.

But something genuinely annoyed me: some UPI merchants still refuse to accept credit cards through UPI. Ran into this at exactly 3 places out of maybe 40 I tried. They’d only process debit cards or direct bank payments.

Real Talk About Fees

I spent the first week waiting for hidden charges to materialize like they always do with banking products.

Never happened.

Zero joining fee, zero annual fee, nothing buried in fine print. I even called customer support to double-check because I’m paranoid about banking stuff.

If you’re already comfortable with UPI and want credit flexibility without lugging around multiple physical cards, it works well. I’ve kept using mine consistently even after my experiment wrapped up.
